A New Brain

Stage Musical (1998)
Music and Lyrics: William Finn, Book: James Lapine.

Synopsis

This is a semi-autobiographical musical about Gordon Schwinn, a fictitious songwriter afflicted with a rare life-threatening arteriovenous malformation of the brain. He writes songs for Mr Bungee, a children's TV entertainer, but when his illness takes hold, he floats in and out of reality, and fantasizes that Mr Bungee is a frog prince. The illness has a profound effect not only on himself, but also upon everyone around him, including his mother, his male lover, his female best friend, and the nurse who looks after him.
