The Playhouse Theatre in London is located near the River Thames and Trafalgar Square. It first opened as the Royal Avenue Theatre in 1882 and was home to several comic operas in its early days. Part of the theatre had to be rebuilt when the nearby Charing Cross railway station collapsed onto the building, in 1905, and in 1907, the venue opened up under its current name, the Playhouse Theatre.

In 1951, the Playhouse was taken over by the BBC who turned the venue into a studio for live performances. Such legendary bands like The Beatles and Queen performed there, but by 1976 the theatre went into a state of disrepair and left the Playhouse.

In 1987 the theatre opened with the musical Girlfriend, which marked the beginning of a host of other successful musicals being shown at the Playhouse. Others include La Cage Aux Folles. Today, the theatre is home to jukebox musical Dreamboats and Petticoats.
