Tootsie is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Robert Horn. The musical is based on the 1982 American comedy film of the same name written by Larry Gelbart, Barry Levinson(uncredited), Elaine May (uncredited) and Murray Schisgal from the story by Gelbart and Don McGuire. The musical is expected to make its world premiere try-out at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago in fall 2018. Like the film, the musical tells the story of a talented but volatile actor whose reputation for being difficult forces him to adopt a new identity as a woman in order to land a job.

A stage musical version of the movie is expected to premiere at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago from September 11 to October 14, 2018 before opening on Broadway on March 29, 2019 in previews at the Marquis Theatre. The musical will have music and lyrics by David Yazbek; Robert Horn will write the book; Denis Jones will choreograph and Scott Ellis will direct. Santino Fontana will star as Michael Dorsey. He will be joined by Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols, Sarah Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Van Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Mallory, Michael McGrath as Stan Fields and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.
